The H.L. Hunley

Tuesday, August 8, 2000

Hi all. Today Laura and I took vacation days and had the best time we have had in a long time.

We went out into the Charleston Harbor and watched The Hunley come home after 136 years.

The Hunley was the very first submarine to sink an enemy ship. This happened in 1864 during the Civil War. In the act of sinking the enemy ship, The Hunley, itself was sunk … and hasn't been seen since … until today!

We went out to see the crane bring up the sub, then went through the harbor and observed the 21 gun cannon salute, fired in honor as a tribute to the 9 men who are still in the sub.

We were really moved by it all. Wish you could have seen it.

They expect the contents of the sub to like a Civil War time capsule. It was really something.

There must have 500 to 1,000 boats out there around the harbor, escorting the barge with the sub.

Below are a few of the pictures I took. The photos were tough to get because of the rough seas when the hoard of boats were all together.

It was neat being part of history … and I thought I saw our boat on CNN when we got home and watched the news. As Bart Simpson would say, "Way Coooooool, Man!"

Be sure to bookmark this page and click on my or Laura's e-mail address below, and let us know what you think about the pictures. - Ron
